Crusher Parts: The Real Cost Is Not the Purchase Price.

When purchasing replacement parts for a crusher, the first comparison is usually price.

But for a quarry, mine or aggregate producer, the cheapest part is not necessarily the part with the lowest cost.

The real question should be:

What will this part cost me per tonne produced?

That calculation includes much more than the purchase price.


Downtime is often more expensive than the part:


A crusher is typically a critical part of the production process.

If it stops unexpectedly, the cost doesn't end with the maintenance invoice. Production slows or stops, employees and equipment may be left waiting, maintenance resources have to be redirected and the entire plant can be affected.


Recent industry examples illustrate just how important crusher reliability can be.


FLS reported a copper-mine application where frequent mantle changes required approximately 10 hours of downtime per change. After optimizing the liner design and metallurgy for the actual operating conditions, the mine reduced mantle consumption from 20 to eight per year and reported a 24% reduction in annual maintenance costs.


The lesson isn't simply that one liner was better than another.

It is that wear parts need to match the application.


Metallurgy matters.


Crusher wear parts operate under a combination of abrasion, impact and compression.

Two parts that appear identical can perform very differently depending on:

  • Chemical composition

  • Heat treatment

  • Hardness

  • Casting quality

  • Crusher operating conditions

  • Feed material

  • Feed size

  • Moisture

  • Impact level


For manganese components, for example, simply specifying “manganese steel” doesn't tell the whole story.


The appropriate alloy depends on the application.


A harder material isn't automatically better either. Increased hardness can improve abrasion resistance but may also reduce impact resistance if the metallurgy isn't appropriate for the application.


That is why replacing a crusher component should involve more than matching its dimensions.


You don't necessarily need to be limited to one supply chain.


Traditionally, many operators purchase crusher parts through the original equipment manufacturer or an established dealer network.

There are good reasons for doing so.

But it doesn't have to be the only option.

Part number, drawing or sample.


In many cases, sourcing can begin with something as simple as an existing OEM part number.

For less common parts, a drawing can be used.

And when drawings are no longer available, an existing component can sometimes provide the information necessary to evaluate manufacturing options.

The objective isn't simply to reproduce a piece of metal.

The important questions are:


What material should it be made from?

How should it be heat treated?

Which dimensions and tolerances are critical?

What operating conditions will the component experience?


Those details ultimately determine whether a replacement part becomes a good investment or an expensive maintenance problem.


Measure wear parts by cost per tonne.


A useful way to compare alternatives is to stop looking only at price per part.

Instead, track:


Purchase price ÷ tonnes processed during the life of the component


Then consider the cost of installation and downtime as well.

For example, Part A may cost 20% less than Part B.

But if Part B lasts 40% longer, requires one less shutdown and maintains better crusher performance as it wears, the apparently more expensive part may actually provide the lowest operating cost.

The opposite can also be true.


A non-OEM component doesn't automatically provide savings simply because its purchase price is lower.


Performance has to be measured.


Build a second source before you need one.


One of the worst times to search for an alternative supplier is when the crusher is already down.

For critical components, having a second qualified sourcing option can provide flexibility when availability, pricing or lead times change.

That doesn't necessarily mean replacing your existing supplier.

It means having another option.
