Concrete Production Is Expanding. Are Your Mixers Keeping Up?

In concrete production, lost capacity doesn't always come from major equipment failures. Sometimes it comes from worn mixing paddles, concrete buildup and the extra minutes spent cleaning equipment between production runs.

As infrastructure investment continues across Canada, keeping existing concrete plants productive is becoming increasingly important.

On October 23, 2026, Ontario announced a $1 million investment to help establish a concrete railway tie manufacturing facility in North Bay. This follows the province's 2026 infrastructure plan, which includes approximately $37 billion in planned capital investment for 2026–27. NOHFC+1

For precast and ready-mix producers, these developments highlight the importance of reliable production equipment.

Small Components, Big Production Impact

Concrete mixers operate under abrasive conditions. Over time, worn paddles and liners can increase maintenance requirements, while accumulated concrete makes cleaning more difficult.

Two areas deserve particular attention:

Wear-resistant mixing components. Hawiflex polyurethane paddles, scrapers and liners offer an alternative to conventional components in suitable concrete-mixing applications. Their wear resistance and low concrete adhesion can help extend replacement intervals and simplify cleaning.

Automated cleaning systems. WALTER provides cleaning solutions for concrete plant mixers and truck mixer drums. Automating routine cleaning can reduce manual work, limit concrete buildup and improve equipment availability.

Improve the Equipment Before Replacing It

Before investing in additional production capacity, concrete manufacturers should review three simple questions:

  • Are worn paddles or liners creating unnecessary maintenance?

  • How much productive time is lost to mixer and truck cleaning?

  • Could improved wear materials or automated cleaning increase equipment availability?

At Bourdin Industrial, we help concrete manufacturers investigate polyurethane wear components, replacement mixing parts and automated cleaning solutions suited to their equipment and operating conditions.

More production doesn't always require more machines. Sometimes it starts with getting more out of the equipment already installed.
